Two people were arrested Tuesday afternoon after they were accused of abusing a 2-year-old girl, police said.
Ashlee Nichole Liberty, 25, the girl’s mother, was booked into Pima County jail on suspicion of one count of child abuse, said Sgt. Maria Hawke, a Tucson Police Department spokeswoman.
Liberty’s boyfriend, Oscar Omar Aguirre, 28, was booked into jail on suspicion of two counts of child abuse, Hawke said in a news release.
Aguirre is not the girl’s biological father.
Tucson police began investigating the case Saturday when the medical staff at a hospital treated the girl, who had severe injuries.
The Tucson Fire Department originally transported the girl from a home in the 5400 block of East 18th Street after a 911 caller told the authorities the child was having difficulty breathing.
