A woman was shot and killed by her estranged husband who then turned the gun on himself Monday morning on Tucson's north side, police said.
Maria Carolina Coleman-Velasco, 49, was killed in her car soon after she arrived at her workplace in the 300 block of West Alturas Street, said Sgt. Maria Hawke, a Tucson Police Department spokeswoman.
Detectives determined that her estranged husband, Julio Cesar Velasco, 59, had arrived there ahead of her and waited. When she arrived, he walked up to the car, a Toyota Scion, and shot her several times and then shot himself, Hawke said.
Both were pronounced dead at the scene.
Police received calls about shots being fired in the neighborhood, near North Oracle and West Grant roads, just before 11:30 a.m., Hawke said.
Investigators believe the attack on Coleman-Velasco was unprovoked, Hawke said.
