Former City Manager Mike Hein was arrested early Saturday in Oro Valley on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol, police said.
An Oro Valley DUI task force officer stopped Hein just after midnight near West Hardy Road and North Northern Avenue for a traffic violation, said Liz Wright, an Oro Valley Police Department spokeswoman.
The officer saw signs of DUI and conducted a blood test, Wright said. Hein was taken into custody but later released, she said. He could not be reached for comment Saturday.
Hein, Tucson's city manager since April 2005, lost the job in April when the City Council voted 4-3 to fire him. He received six months' severance pay.
Hein's dismissal came after a period of upheaval that culminated with the Legislature considering pulling the plug on the $600 million tax-increment-financing district that funds the Rio Nuevo downtown revitalization effort, or slapping heavy sanctions on it.

The city's $44 million in reserves had been spent down to $11 million, giving the city no leeway to bridge an estimated $80 million revenue shortfall for the fiscal year that began July 1.
Before serving as Tucson's city manager, Hein was a deputy Pima County administrator and worked for Marana, Nogales and the city of South Tucson.
In May, Hein was named a finalist for city manager of Lakewood, Colo. A longtime Lakewood city employee got the job.
