A 16-month-old boy who nearly drowned in a pool at a North Side home Wednesday afternoon is in stable condition, police said.
The boy was found face-down in the backyard in the 1500 block of West Otilia Drive, near West Prince and North Flowing Wells roads, shortly after 12:30 p.m. by his great-grandmother, who was taking care of him at the time, said Sgt. Decio Hopffer, a Tucson Police Department spokesman.
Hopffer said the boy and his great-grandmother had just arrived home from shopping when she got the child out of the car and put him in the front yard while she unloaded bags.
When the woman realized the child had wandered away, she immediately went looking for him and found him in the pool, Hopffer said.
She performed CPR on the boy until the Tucson Fire Department arrived and took the child to University Medical Center, he said.

Police found that the gate surrounding the pool had been left unlocked and are trying to determine if the homeowner will be fined for not having a self-locking gate, Hopffer said.
"This exemplifies how quickly little ones can get away and how cognizant we need to be of where they are at all times," Hopffer said. "Luckily, she realized soon enough that he was missing, found him and was able to perform CPR, possibly saving his life."
