A free tour of three local water-treatment facilities — the Clearwater Recharge and Recovery Facility, the Hayden-Udall Treatment Plant in Avra Valley and the Sweetwater Wetlands — will be held April 7.
The tour will leave at 8 a.m. from Desert Christian School, 7525 E. Speedway. Participants will ride a Sun Tran bus to the three facilities and return around 1 p.m.
The tour, hosted by Tucson Vice Mayor Carol West, will focus on the processes that Tucson Water uses to treat and maintain the quality of the area's potable water, which must meet state and federal standards.
Participants also will learn how effluent produced by Pima County's wastewater-treatment facilities is further refined by Tucson Water for use in habitat restoration, turf irrigation and recharge projects.
Cameras and binoculars are allowed. Participants should wear long pants and closed-toed shoes and should take a hat, sunscreen and bug repellent. Water will be provided, but participants should take their own snacks or lunch.
