Evocative art songs and boleros by some of Mexico's most famous composers will be sung by tenor Humberto Borboa in a lunchtime recital Tuesday at Academy Village.
An accomplished performer, Borboa is a graduate student in vocal performance at the University of Arizona. He came to UA by invitation of professor Grayson Hirst following their meeting at the Ars Vocalis International Voice Academy and Festival in Zamora, Mexico, in 2011.
In his Tuesday recital, "Serenata Mexicana," Borboa will share familiar melodies such as Lara's "Granada" and Grever's "Jurame," along with other lesser-known but no less beautiful and appealing songs by Maria Grever, Agustin Lara, Manuel Ponce and Jorge del Moral.
Borboa will be accompanied by Chien-I Yang, a doctoral candidate in piano performance at the UA. She also will perform two solo piano selections from Manuel Ponce's "Intermezzos."

Borboa received his undergraduate degree in voice from the Escuela Superior de Canto de Mazatlan and has appeared as soloist in Orff's "Carmina Burana" and in operatic roles such as Count Almaviva in Rossini's "Il Barbiere di Seviglia."
His debut role with the UA Opera Theatre this past November was as Alfredo in Verdi's "La Traviata," and he will sing the role of Tito in Mozart's "La Clemenza di Tito" this spring.
Borboa participated in the 2012 Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions where he won the Encouragement Award. In a January competition at the UA he was awarded a full scholarship to a summer program in Italy, where he will sing the role of Edgardo in Donizetti's "Lucia de Lammermoor."
"Serenata Mexicana" will be presented in the great room of the Arizona Senior Academy at Academy Village, 13715 E. Langtry Lane.
