University High School Principal Dean Packard has announced he is leaving TUSD’s award-winning school just six weeks before classes are scheduled to resume.
The Tucson Unified School District wasted no time, posting Packard’s position on TUSD1.org, and is planning to conduct a national search to find a replacement. The first review of applicants is scheduled for July 6.
In a letter to UHS community members, Packard said the departure was not planned but he was asked to apply for a new position at the College Board, which works to connect students to college success and opportunity.
“The decision was not an easy one,” Packard explained. “I love being at UHS. I love the students, the amazing staff and intellectual challenge the school brings every day.”

Packard noted that much of what needs to be in place for the upcoming school year is already near completion, and efforts are underway to ensure a smooth transition.
UHS, which served more than 1,000 students last year, has long been known as one of the top high schools in the country.
The Tucson Unified School District has been working to maintain the level of rigor while diversifying the student population.
