Organizers at St. Philip's in the Hills Episcopal Church imported a fundraising concept from across the seas, holding their first boot sale Saturday at the church parking lot, 4440 N. Campbell Ave.
People who showed up looking for a good deal on footwear were probably perplexed to find what amounted to a mobile garage sale at Campbell and East River Road.
"I don't think people understood what a boot sale was," said Tom Cross, a native of England, who with his wife, Sue, from New Zealand, helped get the event on the road.
"Boot" is the word for a car trunk in most of the English Commonwealth, where people sell things from their cars to get rid of clutter while getting out and about.
Prospective merchants paid a fee for a space to display their offerings at St. Philip's, and about 20 people took advantage of the chance to sell whatever they could stuff in one vehicle.

"We did it at my parish in Iowa," said Joyce Stewart, who came up with using the boot sale idea at St. Philip's. "People just had a wonderful time."
Added Tom Cross: "We don't want to do things that are merely fundraisers. "We want to do things that build the community.
"It's a way to get to know our neighbors."
