St. Philips in the Hills Episcopal Church's Bloom Music Center hummed with the gentle sounds of flutes during a Tucson Flute Club recital last Sunday.
"It's great for people to play together in large groups," said Deena Reedy, the club's director, who ran Sunday's recital.
"Your ability improves when you can play with other people."
Phil Swanson founded the club 35 years ago when he ran an ad in the newspaper looking for people interested in forming a flute club. To his surprise, he found a few people interested in the idea.
At the time, there were only a handful of similar clubs in the country.
"I just wanted for people to have a chance to play together and enjoy playing the flute with one another," Swanson said.
"I had no idea that the club would still be going after 35 years."

Today, the membership has grown to a little less than 100 flutists, ranging from adults — some of whom have been part of the club since its inception — to children in the youth choir.
