St. Philip's in the Hills Episcopal Church's special liturgical music resumes this fall.
On Sunday, Mozart's Coronation Mass will be presented as part of the liturgy for the 9 and 11:15 a.m. services.
Woosug Kang, St. Philip's new music director, will conduct the St. Philip's Singers, the Canterbury Choir and the Canterbury Choir Apprentices. They will be accompanied by St. Philip's Chamber Orchestra, which is made up of well-known Tucson musicians.
Mass in C, KV 317, is one of the well-known sacred pieces by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, and it gained its nickname "Coronation Mass" when Salieri conducted it at the coronation of Leopold II as king of Bavaria in 1791.
The mass is filled with exciting, rhythmic passages in movements such as the "Gloria." The famous, hauntingly beautiful "Agnus Dei" provides a taste of Mozart's famous aria "dove Sono" from "The Marriage of Figaro." This mass will be sung throughout the worship as part of the liturgy rather than as a performance.
