How do trumpet players have fun? According to Edward Reid and Jason Carder, they call together Tucson's hottest trumpeters, mix in some other brass, percussion, bass and jazz piano, and stage a "Trumpet Spectacular."
St. Philip's Friends of Music presents this musical event at 7 p.m. Wednesday at St. Philip's in the Hills Episcopal Church.
The program includes an array of music for trumpets and other brass instruments as well as percussion, piano and bass.
Two works composed by Jeff Haskell will receive their U.S. premieres: "Tyspomedia," which was written for the UA Trumpet Ensemble's 2008 performance at the International Trumpet Guild Conference in Banff, Canada, and "Woolloomooloo Overserved," which was written for the 2010 International Trumpet Guild Conference in Sydney, Australia.
The lineup of prominent local trumpeters includes Carder, Reid, Eric Hyland, David Cohen, Betsy Bright Morgan, Adam Ackermann and Kenny Smukal. Their ensembles will be rounded out by Victor Valenzuela on horn, Scott Black on bass, Homero Cerón on percussion and Haskell on piano.
