Reptiles on the prowl
Each Friday from now through the end of October, Tohono Chul Park visitors of all ages can learn about snakes, lizards and other cold-blooded reptiles that live in the desert.
Reptile Ramble begins at 10 a.m. at the park, 7366 N. Paseo del Norte. Admission is $7 for adults; $5 for seniors and active members of the military. Children 5 to 12 years old pay $3 and those under 5 get in free.

NW Fire/Rescue offering first aid, CPR classes
The Northwest Fire/Rescue District is offering several classes in the coming weeks.

● Basic first aid, 6 to 10 p.m. today.
● CPR for health-care providers, 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday.
● Basic cardiopulmonary resuscitation, 6 to 10 p.m. May 14 and 6 to 10 p.m. May 21.
All classes are held at Station 30, 1520 W. Orange Grove Road. Space is limited, so you must register in advance.
Registration fees for the first aid and basic CPR classes are $20 for fire district residents and $25 for those living outside the district.
Health-care-provider CPR is $25 for district residents and $30 for those living outside the district. Registration fees are non-refundable.

Nanini Library to close for renovations
The Nanini Branch Library, 7300 N. Shannon Road, will be closed for renovations Saturday, through May 18. The book drop also will be closed. Library patrons are encouraged to use one of the following branches during the closure:
● Wheeler Taft Abbett Sr. Library, 7800 N. Schisler Drive in Marana;
● Oro Valley Public Library, 1305 W. Naranja Drive in Oro Valley;
● Flowing Wells Library, 1730 W. Wetmore Road;

Foundation funding programs for youth
At a breakfast that officially launched the Oro Valley Community Foundation Tuesday, the nonprofit group awarded a total of $2,600 in grants to three area organizations.
The Teens Sew Cool program received $600 to buy sewing machines and supplies that will be used to teach sewing skills to students at San Manuel Junior/Senior High School and Coronado K-8 School in Catalina.
Interfaith Community Services received $1,000 to help low-income children pay for athletic fees, camp, art classes and other activities offered through its summer programs.
The Greater Oro Valley Arts Council received $1,000 to fund its "Musical Gold in the Mornings," a program that exposes schoolchildren to the lives and music of classical composers such as Ludwig van Beethoven.

Town is looking for a few good volunteers
Oro Valley is seeking applicants for a volunteer position on the town's Water Utility Commission.
The vacancy is for a commercial and/or turf representative who has interest and knowledge of water-related issues. Applicants must be residents and employed by a commercial and/or turf customer of the Town of Oro Valley Water Utility.
The commission meets the second Monday of each month at 6 p.m. The three-year term begins July 1.
The town also is seeking a resident to serve as its representative to the Pima County Bond Advisory Committee. The volunteer is appointed by the Town Council.

The deadline to submit applications for the county Advisory Committee is Friday. Applications for the Water Utility Commission are due May 15.

China painters club to meet at Abbett library
The World Organization of China Painters Club "Prickly Pear Porcelain Painters" will meet at 1 p.m. May 16 at the Wheeler Taft Abbett Sr. Library.
The group is looking for china painters interested in becoming club members and is planning to meet monthly from September through May.

Marana food bank needs to fill volunteer positions
The Marana Community Food Bank, 11734 W. Grier Road, has a shortage of volunteers now that winter visitors are leaving.
Volunteers are needed in the warehouse to unload trucks, prepare food boxes, pull food-box orders, answer telephones, sort and wash produce and work with clients by checking them through the computer system.
The Marana food bank also needs truck drivers to help collect food donations in the area.
The food bank can't accomplish its mission without volunteer help, said Cecilia Muñoz, manager of the Marana food bank.

Picture Rocks
Picture Rocks Pride Faire Saturday
Citizens for Picture Rocks and the Picture Rocks Community Center are hosting a Picture Rocks Pride Community Faire from 2 to 6 p.m. Saturday at the Picture Rocks Community Center and park, 5615 N. Sanders Road.
The event is free for the whole family, and Dist. 3 Supervisor Sharon Bronson will join to celebrate the new shade cover over the tots play area and soon-to-be-built BMX skate park.
There will be game booths, hot dogs, a pie-eating contest, a cake walk, jumping castle, crafts, a bloodmobile and more.
