Flags flying at half-staff

The American Flag and Arizona Flag lay at half staff, in front of Pima County Public Service Center, for White Mountain Apache Police Officer David Kellywood, in Tucson, Ariz. on February 18, 2020. Officer Kellywood was killed in the line of duty in a shooting in the early morning of February 17, 2020, according to Navajo County Sheriff's Office.

If you are driving around and notice the American or Arizona flags flying at half-staff, you may wonder why. Sure, you know when a former president has died, but sometimes these are done in memory of a tragic event.

For all of 2021, we are going to tell you when and why the flags for the United States of America, Arizona or any other state or territory of the U.S. are flown at half-staff.

The source for much of this information is FlagSteward.org

According to USFlag.org, which links to a copy of the United States Code, when the flag is flown at half-staff, it should first be hoisted to the peak and then lowered to half-staff. At sunset the flag should be raised back to full-staff and then lowered slowly all the way down.

The U.S. flag must be flown at half-staff for the following office holders or former holders:

  • President of the United States or former president: 30 days from the date of death.
  • Vice President, Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, retired Chief Justice or Speaker of the House of Representatives: 10 days from the date of death.
  • Associate Justice of the Supreme Court, a member of the Cabinet, a former Vice President, President pro tempore of the Senate, Majority Leader of the House of Representatives and Minority Leader of the House: From the day of death until the date of interment.
  • Unites States Senator, Representative, Delegate or the Resident Commissioner from the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico: In the District of Columbia the flag will fly at half-staff on the day of death and the following day, in the state, congressional district, territory or commonwealth of the deceased, the flag will fly at half-staff from the day of death until interment.
  • Governor: Within the state, the flag will fly at half-staff from the day of death until interment.

North Dakota: As ordered by the Governor, all flags on government / public property will fly at half-staff Wednesday, May 26, 2021, in honor of West Fargo Police Department Lt. Adam Gustafson, who died while on duty.

New Mexico: As ordered by the Governor, all flags on state property will fly at half-staff from sunrise Tuesday, May 25, 2021, until sunset, Thursday, May 27, 2021, in honor of Arteisa Police Department Corporal Tom Frazier, who was killed in an auto collision.

Wisconsin: As ordered by the Governor, all flags on state property will fly at half-staff Tuesday, May 25, 2021, in honor of Army Sgt. 1st Class Nicholas J. Valentine who died while serving in the Korean War.

Illinois: As ordered by the Governor, all flags on state property will fly at half-staff beginning Monday, May 24, 2021, and ending at sunset Wednesday, May 26, 2021, in honor of Champaign Police Officer Chris Oberheim, who was killed in the line of duty.

May 23, 2021

Indiana: As ordered by the Governor, all flags in Delaware County will fly at half-staff Sunday, May 23, 2021, in honor of former Indiana State Representative Hurley Goodall.

May 21, 2021

Alaska: As ordered by the Governor, all flags at public facilities will fly at half-staff Friday, May 21, 2021, in honor of former Alaska State Senator Paul Fischer.

May 20, 2021

Rhode Island: As ordered by the Governor, all state flags at public facilities will fly at half-staff beginning Thursday, May 20, 2021, and ending at sunset Monday, May 24, 2021, in honor of former Warwick Mayor Joseph Solomon Sr.

May 18, 2021

Virginia: As ordered by the Governor, Commonwealth (state) flags atop the State Capitol will fly at half-staff Tuesday, May 18, 2021, in honor of former Virginia Secretary of Public Safety Gary K. Aronhalt.

Tennessee: As ordered by the Governor, all flags atop the State Capitol and at state facilities will fly at half-staff beginning Tuesday, May 18, 2021, and ending at sunset Friday, May 21, 2021, in honor of State Representative Mike Carter of Ooltewah.

May 17, 2021

Louisiana: As ordered by the Governor, all flags atop the state Capitol and at public facilities will fly at half-staff from May 17, 2021, until sunset on the date of his interment (TBD) in honor of former Governor Charles Elson "Buddy" Roemer III.

South Dakota: As ordered by the Governor, all flags atop the State Capitol will fly at half-staff Sunday, May 16, 2021, in honor of former South Dakota state legislator Charles "Chuck" Welke.

May 15, 2021

Kentucky: As ordered by the Governor, all flags at state facilities will fly at half-staff Saturday, May 15, 2021, in honor of Navy Fireman 2nd Class Martin D. Young of Hawesville, who died in the attack on Pearl Harbor Dec. 7, 1941. His remains were identified in 2020.

May 14, 2021

Oklahoma: As ordered by the Governor, all flags on state property will fly at half-staff Friday, May 14, 2021, in honor of law enforcement officers on all levels killed or disabled in the line of duty.

Wisconsin: As ordered by the Governor, all flags on state property will fly at half-staff Friday, May 14, 2021, in honor of Hmong-Lao Veterans Day in Wisconsin consistent with 2021 Wisconsin Act 31 (state law).

California: As ordered by the Governor, all flags atop the State Capitol will fly at half-staff Thursday, May 13, 2021, in honor of Stockton Police Department Officer Jimmy Inn, who was killed in the line of duty.

May 12, 2021 updated

California: As ordered by the Governor, all flags atop the State Capitol will fly at half-staff Wednesday, May 12, 2021, in honor of San Luis Obispo Police Department Detective Lucas "Luca" Benedetti, who was killed in the line of duty.

Connecticut: As ordered by the Governor, all flags at state facilities will fly at half-staff beginning Wednesday May 12, 2021, and ending on the date of his interment (TBD), in honor of New Haven Firefighter Ricardo Torres Jr., who died in the line of duty.

Texas: As ordered by the Governor, all flags at all Concho County public facilities will fly at half-staff beginning Wednesday, May 12, 2021, and ending on the date of the latest officer's interment (TBD) in honor of Concho County Constable and Deputy Sheriff Stephen Jones and Concho County Deputy Sheriff Samuel Leonard, who were killed in the line of duty.

Florida: As ordered by the Governor, all flags atop the State Capitol and at all public facilities at the Leon County Courthouse and the City Hall of Tallahassee, will fly at half-staff Monday, May 10, 2021, in honor of the Honorable Joseph W. Hatchett, the first Black Justice of the Florida Supreme Court.

Arizona: As ordered by the Governor, all flags at state facilities will fly at half-staff Saturday, May 8, 2021, in honor of Chandler Police Officer Christopher Farrar, who was killed in the line of duty.

Alabama: As ordered by the Governor, all flags at government / public facilities in the town of Napier Field will fly at half-staff Friday, May 7, 2021, in honor of Mayor Greg Lee Ballard.

Maryland: As ordered by the Governor, all flags at state facilities, concurrent with currently ongoing half-staff, will fly at half-staff Friday, May 7, 2021, in honor of Maryland's Fallen Heroes Day honoring those who have died in service to the state in the past year.

Kansas: As ordered by the Governor, all flags at state facilities will fly at half-staff beginning Friday, May 7, 2021, and ending at sunset Sunday, May 9, 2021, in honor of the more than 5,000 Kansas residents who have died of COVID-19 and their families left behind.

Ohio: As ordered by the Governor, all flags atop the Statehouse, the Vern Riffe Center, the Rhodes State Office Tower and across Athens County will fly at half-staff beginning Monday, May 3, 2021, and continuing until sunset Friday, May 7, 2021, in honor of Nelsonville Firefighter Jeff Armes, who died in the line of duty.
