According to the FBI, there were almost 700,000 officers working in over 14,000 agencies in the United States in 2011 -- one officer for every 420 civilians. While all officers protect and serve the communities they work for, not all officers are paid equally. A report by NBC news after the police shooting of Michael Brown in 2014 found that officers in different areas of St. Louis County experience a huge pay gap.
Using 2015 salary data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, CareerTrends, an employment and career research site powered by Graphiq, compiled a list of the 108 U.S. metro areas where police and patrol officers make the most money. The list is ranked in ascending order, with the highest-paying locale taking the No. 1 spot. When two or more metros' median salaries tie, the places are ordered using the metros' reported salaries for police supervisors.
The salaries for police and patrol officers in different metros vary widely, from $61,210 in Detroit to over $100,000 in five California counties clustered at the top of our range. New York, Miami, Chicago, San Francisco, Boston, Los Angeles and Seattle metro areas also appear on the list. This suggests that variation across police salaries is in part due to cost of living differences, as in many other professions. The California counties at the top of this list are outliers; the mean national salary for police and patrol officers is $61,070, and 65 metros on our list -- a majority -- reported police officer salaries in the $60,000-to-$70,000 range.
