: Began teaching in 1985 in Fairfield, Conn. Took several years off (1988-91) to be a full-time father. Moved with his family to Fort Defiance, Ariz., in 1990. Resumed teaching in 1991 in the Window Rock Unified School District. Went on leave after being elected AEA vice president in 1998.
Union career
: Elected president of the local association in his second year of teaching in the Window Rock district. Elected to the AEA board in 1995 and became treasurer in 1996, vice president in 1998 and president on July 7, 2004.
