Why head impact exposure needs to be regulated in sports
Keisuke Kawata, a clinical neuroscientist and athletic trainer, is an associate professor in the IU School of Public Health-Bloomington, where he studies effects of repetitive head impacts using sensor-installed mouthguard, blood biomarkers, eye tracking and cognitive assessment. His sports medicine training was with NFL Detroit Lions, MLS Sporting Kansas City, MLB Atlanta Braves and ESPN Wide World of Sports. Kawata says repetitive head impacts have been at the forefront of the news, especially surrounding CTE because a lot of people are fearful about CTE. Research has been nothing but retrospective studies, like studying the deceased for example.
