To the Editor: I was appalled by two letters printed by the Star on 1/2/24. These letters were both hateful and antisemitic. There is a clear double standard at work when it comes to Jews and Israel. Imagine if the letter writer had been speaking about the Hispanic, BIPOC, LGBTQ or disabled community, would those letters have been published? I think not.
The author used all the familiar antisemitic tropes and the Star included those. These letters were odious and factually incorrect. False narratives only serve to mislead and deceive. We have all seen that deception often becomes legitimized as “truth."
As a Tucsonan and a Jew, I expected more of our local newspaper. Antisemitism has been around for thousands of years built on falsehoods; it needs no more gas to fan the flames. It is not a matter of being “offended” as you stated in your note to readers today. The facts and the truth matter. Being offended isn’t my issue. The Star must do better.
