Re: the March 23 letter to the editor "Government selling its surplus guns."
Had a recent letter-writer investigated more about the government selling surplus guns he would have found that the surplus guns being sold through the Civilian Marksmanship Program were in an amendment to the 2016 National Defense Authorization Act. The amendment was sponsored by Alabama Republican Representative Mike Rogers and approved by then President Obama but only after it was amended to include a number of changes to discretionary spending.
As far as his referring to " those who attach the world assault to anything that shoots", this is Merriam Webster's definition of "assault weapon"; any of the various intermediate-range, magazine-fed military rifles (such as the AK 47) that can be set for automatic or semiautomatic fire; also a rifle that resembles a military assault rifle but is designed to allow only semiautomatic fire. It is the weapon of choice by Mass Murderers.

The weapons being sold are the same weapon that my uncle used in WWII and hardly resemble an "assault weapon".
