Cancer has long been considered a disease that mostly affects older adults, but doctors are seeing a concerning shift. More Millennials and Gen Z patients are being diagnosed with cancers that were once far more common later in life, and researchers are working to understand why. According to the 2026 American Cancer Society report, colorectal cancer rates have continued to decline overall since the 1980s. However, among adults under 50, cases have been rising by 2.9% each year, and these cancers are often more aggressive. Researchers are now investigating a wide range of possible factors, including processed foods, alcohol, microplastics, and changes to the gut microbiome. A study published in Nature Medicine found that people born after 1965 were 23% more likely to experience accelerated biological aging than those born in the early 1950s. That faster aging was linked to higher rates of lung, gastrointestinal, and uterine cancers. Experts say the findings don't mean younger people should panic, but they do highlight the importance of staying on top of recommended cancer screenings.
