Winner's kick drops Lagat to 2nd in Fifth Avenue Mile
NEW YORK - Amine Laalou of Morocco surged past two-time Olympic medalist and Tucsonan Bernard Lagat in the final stretch of the Fifth Avenue Mile on Sunday.
Defending champion Shannon Rowbury led an American sweep in the women's event.
Laalou won in 3 minutes 52.83 seconds in his first appearance in the race. Lagat came up short in his third attempt, finishing in 3:53.30.
Defending champion Andy Baddeley of Britain was third in 3:53.34, and Alan Webb of the United States was fourth in 3:53.72. Webb, the American mile record-holder, won in 2007.
Rowbury finished in 4:24.12, edging Sara Hall, who finished in 4:24.34. Erin Donahue was third.

• In Berlin, Patrick Makau of Kenya won the 37th Berlin Marathon on Sunday, but failed to break the world record set on the course two years ago.
Makau ran through the rain-soaked German capital in 2 hours 5 minutes and 8 seconds, finishing 2 seconds ahead of countryman Geoffrey Mutai. Bazu Worku of Ethiopia was third.
The Kenyans had hoped to break the world record of Ethiopian great Haile Gebrselassie, who ran the Berlin Marathon in 2:03:59 in 2008.

3-time Stanley Cup winner Dandenault calls it quits
MONTREAL - Mathieu Dandenault, the versatile defenseman who won three Stanley Cups with the Detroit Red Wings and later played for the Montreal Canadiens, retired.
Dandenault, 34, last played in the NHL in 2008-09 with Montreal.
Dandenault, selected by Detroit in the second round of the 1994 NHL draft, had 68 goals and 135 assists in 868 career games.
He spent his first nine seasons in Detroit, where he won Stanley Cups in 1997, 1998 and 2002, and then played his final four years with the Canadiens.
Dandenault also played on the Canadian team that won a world championship in 2003.

UA women third after Day 1 of Golfweek tournament
Margarita Ramos shot a 2-under-par 70 Sunday to lead Arizona's women's golf team to third place after the first day of the Golfweek Conference Challenge in Vail, Colo.
Ramos is tied for third in the individual standings.
The Wildcats are at 292, 4 over par and five shots behind co-leaders Tulane and Virginia. The three-day tournament concludes Tuesday.
• In Antalya, Turkey, Tatiana Kashirina of Russia broke the world record in the snatch at the World Weightlifting Championships in the women's super heavyweight category.
Kashirina lifted 310.9 pounds (141 kilograms) to set a snatch world record Saturday, and then improved on that, lifting 319.7 pounds (145 kilograms). The previous record of 308.6 pounds (140 kilograms) was held by Olympic champion Jang Mi-ran of South Korea.
• Anthony Cesario, 34, an All-America lineman at Colorado State who played briefly with the Jacksonville Jaguars and Miami Dolphins, died Saturday night after a day of hunting near Steamboat Springs, Colo.
• Terry Newton, 31, a former British international rugby league player who became the first athlete to be suspended for testing positive for human growth hormone, was found dead Sunday in Orrell, England.
