Juan Almanza, El Taco Rustico

Birra ramen, upper left, birra taco, quesabirra and birrasoup โ€” some of the birria dishes on the menu at El Taco Rustico.

There are not many things in life that beat a good birria taco.ย

The mixture of juicy, savory flavors and warm spices is enough to make you shed tears of happiness as you devour your plate of cheesy quesabirrias.ย

Whether hot or cold, rain or shine, a birria taco always hits the spot no matter the time of year.ย

Next time you're craving a good taco filled with birria and gooey cheese, check out the local eateries below.ย

Trust me, you won't be disappointed.ย

El Rustico

2281 N. Oracle Road

When asked who has the best birria in town, many Tucsonans will mention El Rustico โ€” and for good reason. El Rustico got its start at the Tohono Oโ€™odham Swap Meet, before moving into a building near Grant and Oracle roads during the pandemic. Despite opening during a time when people werenโ€™t leaving their houses, El Rustico managed to become a local favorite. The restaurant was even listed as one of Yelpโ€™s top 100 U.S. taco spots in 2023.ย

Here, you can get birria tacos, quesabirria tacos and birria soup.

Rollies Mexican Patio

4573 S. 12th Ave.

Like El Rustico, Rollies is another fan favorite in Tucson, with many enjoying their birria and quesabirria. While their birria is bomb, Rollies is also known for their birria ramen. Ramen noodles, shredded beef, onions and cilantro are all mixed together in birria broth for this unique take on the traditional dish. Top it off with some lime, and Rollieโ€™s birria ramen has a taste like no other.

Rollies also serves birria burros, quesadillas and loaded fried topped with their delicious birria.ย

Birrieria Guadalajaraย

304 E. 22nd St.

This bright orange spot on 22nd Street gets rave reviews about their birria tortas, burritos, tostadas and tacos. We've also heard Birrieria Guadalajara makes some of the best soups in town!

Ameliaโ€™s Mexican Kitchen

5553 E. Grant Road

Quesabirria tacos continue to rise in popularity. Unlike regular tacos, they dip the tortillas in broth, then cook them with birria and cheese inside. In the end you get a cheesy birria taco that you get to dip into the leftover consommรฉ.

Iโ€™ve had a lot of quesabirria tacos โ€” and the ones at Ameliaโ€™s Mexican Kitchen were unbelievable, in the best way possible. They were the perfect ratio of cheese to birria and had a spicy flavor that wasnโ€™t too overbearing.

El Chivo de Oro

457 W. Irvington Road

If youโ€™re looking for authentic birria made with goat, this food truck has you covered. El Chivo de Oro offers both goat and beef birria tacos and soup. While some may be wary of goat since it can be gamey, the birria at Chivo de Oro is cooked to perfection.

The tacos have great flavor and a nice spicy kick โ€” I couldnโ€™t tell I was eating goat. The homemade flour tortillas were the cherry on top.
