by Taliban kills 74

KABUL — The Taliban unleashed a wave of attacks across Afghanistan on Tuesday, targeting police compounds and government facilities with suicide bombers in the country’s south, east and west, and killing at least 74 people, officials said.

Among those killed in one of the attacks was a provincial police chief. Scores were also wounded, both policemen and civilians.

Afghanistan’s deputy interior minister, Murad Ali Murad, called the onslaught the “biggest terrorist attack this year.”

Health Ministry spokesman Waheed Majroo said the Gardez city hospital reported receiving at least 130 wounded in the attack.

Unmanned spaceship burns up over Dubai

DUBAI — Parts of an unmanned Russian cargo spaceship burned across the night sky of the Arabian Peninsula, drawing gasps from Dubai to Riyadh before breaking up in the Earth’s atmosphere.

The fiery end Monday night to parts of Progress MS-07 came as planned after it delivered 2.75 tons of water, food and scientific equipment to the International Space Station.

But its 80-second appearance in the skies of the United Arab Emirates stunned onlookers in a region where Iran regularly test-fires ballistic missiles and Shiite rebels in Yemen have threatened to use them against Abu Dhabi.

Kurds pull out, leave disputed Iraqi areas

BAGHDAD — Kurdish fighters pulled out of disputed areas across northern and eastern Iraq on Tuesday, one day after giving up the vital oil city of Kirkuk — a dramatic redeployment of forces that opened the way for government troops to move into energy-rich and other strategically important territories.

The vastly outnumbered Kurdish forces, known as the peshmerga, appeared to have bowed to demands from the central government that they hand over areas outside the Kurds’ autonomous region, including territory seized from the Islamic State.

The evacuations exposed a Kurdish leadership in turmoil in the wake of last month’s vote for independence as Iraq shores up its hand for negotiations over resource-sharing with the self-ruling minority.

Thousands more Rohingya cross border

COX’S BAZAR — Thousands more Rohingya Muslims are fleeing large-scale violence and persecution in Myanmar and crossing into Bangladesh, where more than half a million others are already living in squalid camps, according to witnesses and a drone video shot by the U.N. refugee agency.

The video shows thousands upon thousands of Rohingya trudging along a narrow strip of land in southern Bangladesh. The line of refugees stretches for miles.
