It's impossible not to love a theater troupe that transforms toilet paper.
Or one that rarely speaks but tells detailed stories.
Mummenschanz does both - and more. Including elicit a smile with its name, which means masquerade in German.
The theater company, which will be here Saturday, made a big hit when it appeared on the Muppets show back in the '70s. Dancers clad in black and wearing masks went through a whole universe of emotions with just images drawn on toilet paper hanging from the masks. Change an emotion, tear the paper away and a new one appeared. (OK, maybe it was note paper, but I swore at the time it was T.P. and I'm sticking with that - check out the video - search for Mummenschanz on Muppets Show - on YouTube and judge for yourself).
In any case, Mummenschanz is magical. The company uses masks, shadows and lights to weave tales that fascinate. It's a bit of dance, a bit of mime, and a whole lot of interesting.
