1917 Tucson's first airport is on Oracle Road across from the cemetery (Evergreen). It was abandoned shortly after World War I.
1919 Tucson is home to the nation's first municipal airport. It was where the Rodeo Grounds are today.
1927 Charles Lindbergh arrives in his Spirit of St. Louis to dedicate the new Tucson Municipal Airfield. He landed at the University of Arizona.
1927 American, then known as Standard Airlines, is the first commercial carrier to provide service to Tucson.
1948 The airport moves to 2,500 acres at its current location south of town.
1950 Frontier arrives in Tucson. Followed a few years later by TWA, Apache and Continental.
1956 The Arizona Air National Guard 162nd Fighter Group moves to Tucson's airport.

1983 Terminal doubles in size, to 300,000 square feet. Also adds jetways, which eliminates having to push stairs up to the planes' doorways.
1984 Tempe-based America West, now US Airways, starts service in Tucson.
1987 Relocates main runway a half-mile southeast as part of a noise-abatement program.
1994 Southwest Airlines arrives in Tucson. It is the top carrier today.
1994 TIA experiences its largest increase in passenger traffic, with a 25 percent increase in arrivals and departures, thanks in part to the arrival of discount carriers.
2005 An $85 million renovation adds 82,000 square feet, which greatly improves baggage claim.
2007 More than 4.4 million people fly in and out of the airport.
Fall 2008 $30 million concourse renovation scheduled for completion.
