If you were at Country Thunder last Sunday, you got a sneak peak at country newcomer Tyler Farr (“Redneck Crazy,” “Whiskey in My Water”), who will open the Pima County Fair concert series tonight. His show in Florence featured guest appearances by Joe Diffie, Colt Ford and Jason Aldean — none of whom will be anywhere near the Pima County Fairgrounds when Farr takes the stage at 8 p.m.
Farr doesn’t need the assist, mind you. He puts on a rocking show that leans heavily to the kind of country rock that is dominating the genre — driving guitars, blasting percussion and a thumping bass that reverberates in your chest with the kind of thud that physically moves you. And he layers all of that with enough twangy Southern accents to remind you of his Missouri roots.
Drinking is a favored topic — four of the 11 tracks on his debut CD, “Redneck Crazy,” deal with drinking, and a couple more hint about drinking or make you want to drink. Cowgirls and trucks runs a close second and third. But he can slow things down for a heartbreaking ballad (“Hello Goodbye”) that shows off his gentler, softer side.

Farr’s show tonight caps four days of hanging out in Tucson with some of his Nashville songwriting buddies working on songs for his sophomore album.
Farr chatted about that during an interview from his tour bus at Country Thunder.
