Expect to hear some new material when the John Coinman Band performs at a fundraiser for the Rhythm & Roots concert series at Club Congress on Saturday.
The Tucson musician and his bandmates, drummer Larry Cobb and bassist Blair Forward, are also members of Kevin Costner & Modern West.
Yes, that Kevin Costner.
They plan on performing songs at the Congress gig slated to go on the new Modern West album, which should be out in April, Coinman said.
Tucson is the perfect place to test the music, he added, saying, “This will give us an opportunity to play them, flesh them out, and have a good time with them.”
The performance also gives Coinman the chance to raise money for a concert series that has meant a lot to him.

Coinman is a longtime Tucson resident and worked closely on shows with Rhythm & Roots founder and promoter Jonathan Holden for many years.
When Holden died in 2012, “It broke my heart,” Coinman said. “He was a good guy. He was always so kind to me in terms of giving me a platform to play in a more professional way, in more of a concert setting.”
Coinman has seen his share of concert stages, especially since reacquainting with his old pal Costner — a friend from Coinman’s acting days in the early 1980s.
They formed Kevin Costner & Modern West eight years ago, and have taken the project around the world, in addition to releasing several albums.
The group’s latest release, “Famous for Killing Each Other: Music From and Inspired by ‘Hatfields & McCoys,’ ” served as a companion piece to the History Channel miniseries “Hatfields & McCoys,” in which Costner starred in 2012.
Coinman has been pleased with the arrangement, calling it a “viable and lucrative” collaboration.
But he will always make time for Tucson, especially when it comes to things he cares about.
Coinman said he is extra-thrilled that he is able to help out Susan Holden, Jonathan’s wife, who took over producing the Rhythm & Roots series after Holden’s death.
“She is out there all the time, supporting local groups,” he said. “You’ll see her out at venues, listening to Sabra Faulk, Heather Hardy, me, Kevin Pakulis. She is supporting everybody. We want to pay her back and help her move this concert series forward.”
