Dozens of southern Arizona students competed in an auto technician skills contest earlier this month.
The regional SkillsUSA Auto contest was held on Saturday, Feb. 7 at Pima Community College’s automotive facility.
Students completed a written test and demonstrated their handiwork on more than a dozen repair stations. Tasks included everything from identifying brake parts to diagnosing problems.
“It’s a good way for them to base their performance off the other students in southern Arizona,” said Flowing Wells High School Automotive Instructor Jarrad McMurrich. “It heightens their motivation.”
Carlos Tarazon, a senior at Flowing Wells High School, took first place in the competition.
“He never gives up– he’s always thinking outside the box,” McMurrich said of his student.

Mountain View High School students, Daniel Edwards and Caleb Fuehrer, took second and third place.
Like Tarazon, both Mountain View students are seniors, said Mountain View automotive teacher David Damiani.
