The University of Arizona has announced it's extending health benefits to gay and lesbian partners of UA employees.
The UA will be the only university in the state to offer domestic partner benefits and will so so without any state money, the UA publication Lo Que Pasa is reporting.
Gov. Jan Brewer last year rescinded health benefits for domestic partners of state employees.
Gay and lesbian state university employees in November responded with a lawsuit.
The lawsuit filed in U.S. District Court in Phoenix claimed Brewer's move amounted to a violation of constitutional protections guaranteeing equal treatment of all individuals.
Before Brewer signed the legislation, 800 state and university workers were entitled to insurance coverage and and other benefits for their domestic partners, which would include any couple that's cohabitating but unmarried.
