A cat resembling a rare ocelot was killed last weekend on a highway between Superior and Globe, according to an Arizona Game and Fish Department news release.
The agency collected the dead, intact carcass of the animal after it was hit Sunday on U.S. 60 accidentally by a motorist, the press release stated.
The ocelot is a small to medium sized cat that is listed as a federally endangered species.
The cat's remains will be sent to an U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service forensics laboratory in Oregon.
The discovery comes about a week after volunteers from the Witness for Wildlife program retrieved a photograph from a remote camera of an ocelot in Cochise County.
That photo was dated in November.
The Sky Island Alliance, which owns the camera, has not released the photograph.
