Miss Kitty had walked out of the Long Branch Saloon for the last time. After 19 years on television's "Gunsmoke," Amanda Blake was leaving her saloon-owner role to spend more time in support of animal welfare. Blake, a member of the advisory board of the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum, was photographed at the museum on April 11, 1974. She wanted to spend her time improving conditions for animals used in films and strengthening regulations on pet stores. Blake was a longtime proponent of animal causes, and her Phoenix house was home to 32 animals, including a leopard and a lion.
