Tucson has received more than $1 million from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development to build, renovate and repair its public housing.
HUD awarded the city’s Housing and Community Development Department about $1.2 million to replace roofs, plumbing and electrical systems, make energy-efficient upgrades and other improvements as needed, according to a HUD news release.
The South Tucson Housing Authority received $174,408 from HUD.
The two housing authorities were among 3,100 in all 50 states, Washington, D.C., Guam, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands to receive grant money, which totaled $1.8 billion.
According to a HUD study, about 1 million public housing units around the country need $25.6 billion worth of large-scale repairs.
Tucson has an estimated 1,800 public housing units, but no information was available Tuesday on how many of these units need repairs and renovations.
