Mount Lemmon highway was closed at the base Monday night because of snow at higher elevations.
Only residents and people who work on Mount Lemmon whose vehicles have chains or four-wheel drive will be allowed up the mountain, according to the Pima County Sheriff's Department roads condition hotline.
About 5 inches of snow had fallen by 8 p.m. Monday, said Joe Gunia, a firefighter with the Mount Lemmon Fire District.
"The snow began falling late in the afternoon and has been blowing around," Gunia said.
He said it was 28 degrees at 7:45 p.m.
Pima County road crews were plowing snow off the highway Monday night.
