A 10-year-old Tucson boy was killed Sunday in a freak accident while vacationing with his family at a Northern California beach.
Jonathon Andrew Waldrup, a student at Manzanita Elementary School in the Catalina Foothills School District, and a relative were enlarging an existing tunnel that had been dug into the side of a massive sand dune at Salmon Creek Beach, about 70 miles north of San Francisco, when the cave collapsed. The boys were playing on a crowded beach at Bodega Bay.
Jonathon was buried in 6 to 8 feet of sand when the hole uprooted a cypress tree and it fell, collapsing the cave, The Associated Press said.
Jonathon's cousin was only partially buried, and he was able to dig himself out and run for help.
It took rescuers an hour to dig out Jonathon. He was pronounced dead at the scene, media reports said.
