The U.S. Surgeon General has honored the congressional intern credited with saving U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Gifford’s life after she was shot in the head.
On behalf of the National Health Occupations Students of America organization, Surgeon General Regina Benjamin presented Daniel Hernandez with the Heroes Award.
Wednesday’s presentation was made at the Anaheim Convention Center during a conference for students interested in health professions, The Orange County Register says.
Some 6,500 students applauded the 21-year-old Hernandez, who told them people who make a lifetime commitment to helping others are the real heroes.
Giffords was one of 13 people wounded in the Jan. 8 shooting spree in Tucson. Six people were killed.
Hernandez put his hand on the bullet wound and elevated the congresswoman’s head on his lap so she wouldn’t choke on her own blood.
