Tucson had its coldest night of the season Monday and below-freezing temperatures Tuesday morning - and Tucsonans handled it like pros. Well, almost.
By midnight, Tucson had hit the 30-degree mark, with reported temperatures of 25 just before 4 a.m. Tuesday at Tucson International Airport, the National Weather Service said.
Most homeowners covered outdoor pipes to prepare for the freezing weather, but the Tucson Water emergency line received about 40 calls from people with low water pressure because of frozen or broken pipes before 8 a.m., said Fernando Molina, a Tucson Water spokesman.
The Salvation Army's overnight shelter housed 101 people Monday - 40 more than on any other night since Operation Deep Freeze went into effect last week, spokeswoman Tamara McElwee said.
She said the shelter expected to remain busy for the next couple of nights, when the low will be in the upper 30s and lower 40s.
