In this year leading up to Arizona's centennial, Feb. 14, 2012, we'll reprint a story or excerpts each day from the Arizona Daily Star or Tucson Citizen archives.
Sept. 4, 1912
On account of muddy roads and hard rains lasting about 48 hours, the way to Oracle was about impassable last Sunday. The trip was made by Jack Sullivan and G.H. Sawyer, and they had a hard time making the distance. They started out early in the morning and didn't get to Oracle until 7 o'clock that evening. Stewart Bayless and family in another machine had equally as hard luck and didn't make the distance until 8:30 o'clock that night.
The Canyon Del Oro was the worst part of the trip. The wash Del Oro was running full, and it was necessary for the motorists to wait four hours in the rain until the water had subsided.
