1848: The First Dragoons reach Tucson en route to California.
1923: A group of New Yorkers, inspired by Harold Bell Wright's book, "The Mine with the Iron Door," organize a $100,000 corporation to search for the lost mine in the Catalina Mountains.
1939: Goldwyn Studios begins production in Tucson on "The Westerner," starring Gary Cooper.
1948: Downtown's Drachman School is destroyed by fire.
1997: The Air Force concludes its investigation into an A-10 Thunderbolt II crash involving Capt. Craig Button. After excluding other possibilities, the Air Force’s “reluctantly” accepted belief is that Button, a pilot based at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base, probably made a sudden decision to fly to Colorado and commit suicide by crashing into a mountain.
