The last speech had been given and the last beer had been downed, all that remained was for someone to turn out the lights. The nearly 45-year reign of the Pioneer Hotel, at 80 N. Stone Ave., had come to an end. The final event to take place in the hotel's main ballroom was a convention of the Pima County Democratic Party. On Oct. 1, 1974, after that event, the ballroom remained just as the attendees had left it. There was no longer the staff, or probably even the need, to clean it up.
