Tucsonans are desperate for deep snow -- so much that they filled Mount Lemmon to capacity today, the Pima County Sheriff's Department reported.
This afternoon, cars were backed up at the base of the Mount Lemmon Highway. Travelers hoping to see the snowy mountain are waiting at the base and only allowed to go up as others vehicles come down.
It has also been a tough slog driving down, as traffic was jammed for a couple of miles near the base of the mountain, Star staffer Kristen Cook reported Saturday afternoon.
At midday, the Pima County Sheriff's Office posted an alert on its road hotline number, 547-7510, earlier today the road was "very congested." The department also noted that the "back route" up the mountain, the Oracle Control Road, is closed until spring.
