A severely abused shepherd mix found hanging from a tree and left for dead near Kino Stadium on Tuesday is doing better and showing staff members that she’s happy to be alive.
Workers at the Pima Animal Care Center named the dog Sunny because they needed to believe her days would get brighter, said a post on the center’s Facebook page.
Sunny has been going home at night with one of PACC’s vets, Dr. Jennifer Wilcox, and is staying with her over the weekend so her progress can be monitored.
On the way to work with Wilcox on Thursday, Sunny stuck her nose out the car window, an email from PACC said.
“She’s showing us she wants to be alive again,” said Wilcox.
Sunny is walking around, and on Saturday morning was able to eat on her own without hand feeding, said PACC spokeswoman Karen Hollish.

A generous donor has paid for Sunny to get an ultrasound to assess the extent of her internal injuries — a service PACC doesn’t have the equipment do to on its own, Hollish said.
“A foster family is lined up for Sunny and it’s our hope that she’ll be well enough to move in with them on Monday,” she said.
In response to hearing about what happened to Sunny and what’s being done to save her, the John M. Simpson Foundation has pledged to match donations to PACC’s medical fund up to $5,000.
The medical fund helps PACC purchase pain medication, antibiotics, IV fluid and pay for veterinarian time. The center takes in an average of 60 animals a day, many of them abused or neglected and in need of medical care.
