Students in Sahuarita All-Stars Cheerleading classes somersaulted, jumped and tumbled their way through practice at Rancho Sahuarita's clubhouse this week.
The Minis, as they're called, are 8 years old and younger and they never seemed to stop moving during their 50-minute class on Monday.
Minis will learn basic gymnastic skills such as handstands, cartwheels, round-offs and back-walkovers during the course of the year.
"Some of our kids didn't know how to do a summersault on the first day," said Johnna Everett, Minis coach and a former cheerleading coach at Cienega and Empire high schools in Vail. "After three days they were able to do a cartwheel," she said. "The kids should expect to learn a lot of basic skills."
"Cheerleading is pretty good; you learn to do cartwheels and jumps," said Breanna Field, a member of the Mini team.
