Student from three Tucson-area high schools were named winners in a statewide video contest sponsored by the Arizona Chapter of Population Media Center.
The video contest featured cash prizes for creating a short video exploring how a rapidly growing human population might impact the world, Arizona, or the student’s future quality of life.
Winning the $1,000 grand prize was Joyce Wang of University High School. Wang’s video showed the contributions to climate change caused by everyday actions. She also won for best technical presentation.
Santa Rita High School senior Jacob Hancock was recognized for his video linking population growth to increases in student/teacher ratios and demand for natural resources. His piece was named the video best demonstrating the impact of continued population growth on today’s students.

A team of four freshmen biology students from Sunnyside High School won the award for best presentation of the environmental impacts of population growth. Victor Armstrong, Citlalli Galindo, Jordan Martin and Cesar Martinez highlighted that the world adds 200,000 people to its population per day, and emphasized that space is not the only problem.
