St. Philip's Friends of Music present "Liederabend: An Intimate Evening of Mirth and Enjoyment Featuring German Art Songs and Ensembles 2/3" at 7 p.m. Friday.
The event will take place in the Bloom Music Center at St. Philip's in the Hills Episcopal Church, 4440 N. Campbell Ave.
The German art song, or Lied, reached its zenith during the Romantic movement of the 19th century. Most of the primary German composers of the time composed Lieder, using as texts the work of contemporary poets as well as earlier sources.
Usually set for solo voice and keyboard, these pieces expressed romantic love, intense longing and appreciation of pastoral beauty. The songs were intended to be performed in intimate settings such as salons, often in the homes of the composers themselves or their friends.
Vocalists Dianne Iauco, Mary Paul, Doug Spurlin and Larry Alexander, with Bonnie Bird on the piano, will perform.
