For many years, the Tack Room was where Tucsonans celebrated birthdays, anniversaries and any other special occasion that required a special elegance. The restaurant, which opened in 1965, had received a five-star rating from a national travel guide for 19 years starting in 1977. Occupying the former Vactor family home, the restaurant at 7300 E. Vactor Ranch Trail, off North Sabino Canyon Road, had once been part of a guest ranch operated by the family. Drew Vactor is shown here on Oct. 13, 1982, giving a final check to one of the tables in the restaurant's three dining rooms. The restaurant operation changed hands in 2000 and continued to operate until 2003. In 2005, the contents and the building materials were auctioned off at fundraising galas and the land was divided for housing.
