Could the state Republican convention in Mesa next week play a pivotal role in who will be the Republican nominee? At least one state official thinks so, saying the 58 delegates sent to Cleveland this summer could be the margin between GOP presidential candidates Donald Trump and Ted Cruz if there is more than one round of voting at the convention.

Even before Republicans met in legislative districts to choose delegates to the state convention, supporters of Trump and Cruz reached out to loyalists and asked them to consider being a state and a national delegate.

All 1,251 state delegates will reconvene as a group, electing the state’s national committeeman and national committeewoman. Also, the state party chair will be a national delegate.
The group will next choose the remaining 28 delegates from a massive paper ballot.

A total of 1,251 Republicans have been elected as delegates for the April 30 state convention. Many have never attended a state convention before.

Supporters of Trump, Cruz and and possibly Kasich are expected to hand out information to delegates prior to voting in Mesa, offering their own slate of candidates.
