The Pima Community College Board voted to demolish 3 historic motels in the Historic Miracle Mile District that they purchased intending to preserve them.
PCC was a contributor to Tucson’s Thrive in 05 plan adopted by Mayor and Council in 2022. This plan calls for reducing crime and revitalizing the Oracle/Miracle Mile neighborhoods. The plan celebrates Tucson’s history, including the motels and neon signs. They are not circus-like, as one board member said; they are icons of Tucson’s past.
PCC could create student-run motels, using their construction programs, like carpentry, electrical, HVAC, plumbing, and welding to restore the motels and their culinary arts, hospitality, hotel, and restaurant management coursework to run the motels. The hands-on learning would provide real-world experiences for students.

PCC should live up to their name, “Community,” and be an educational partner in Tucson. Let’s hope the incoming board moves to undo the decision made by outgoing board members.
