University of Arizona and Mountain View High School graduate Lacey Nymeyer was named the NCAA's Woman of the Year on Sunday at a banquet in Indianapolis.
The 2008 Beijing Olympics silver-medal swimmer became the third UA athlete in the 19-year history of the award to be chosen: High jumper Tanya Hughes in 1993 and swimmer Whitney Myers in 2007 preceded Nymeyer.
No other Pac-10 athlete has been selected for the award.
"All 30 finalists were at the banquet and it was announced in a format like the Academy Awards," said UA swimming coach Frank Busch. "Lacey was so overcome; she almost couldn't get out of her chair."
Nymeyer was the team captain of UA's 2008 NCAA national championship swimming team.
She earned her degree from the UA in physical education in May.

The NCAA's Woman of the Year award is determined by athletic achievement, academic performance and community service.
After winning a silver medal in the World Championships in Italy in August, Nymeyer has spent two months giving swimming clinics in more than 20 U.S. cities. She has resumed training at the UA's Hillenbrand Aquatics Center for competition in 2010.
