Arizona women's basketball coach Adia Barnes said the UA is still waiting to hear from the NCAA on whether Courtney Blakely, a transfer guard from Middle Tennessee State, will be cleared to play.Â
From the little that Barnes has shared — she spoke briefly about the issue after Arizona (3-0) defeated Loyola Marymount (0-2) Sunday, 70-54 at McKale Center — she said the situation came as a surprise to everyone.Â
After Blakely, a junior from Gary, Indiana, who averaged 7.1 points and thre rebounds per game at MTSU last season, transferred to the UA, Barnes said she "then found out something about that because it involved me, too.
"And she sat our and there were repercussion on both ends, which is amazing for me and very surprising," Barnes added. "I think that some stuff just gets held up and sits places. I sometimes wonder if it sits the same amount of time on the men's side? I would probably think not. But so we're just waiting. It's at the mercy of when her file is read. And when she's reinstated. It was something that was out of her control and really not fair situation for a student-athlete or myself. So it is what it is. I can't control this and we're waiting. So as soon as her cases looked at, then she'll probably be reinstated."

Courtney Blakely releases the ball for a shot during preseason practice at McKale Center on Oct. 3.
The junior who also averaged 2.6 assists and 1.3 steals per game last season and had a 43 to 24 assist-to-turnover ratio, is " a dynamic guard that presses the ball the way we want to play," Barnes said.Â
"We're going to see a huge improvement when she comes back just because her presence on the ball," Barnes said. "She is all over."Â
