Cardboard boats race in Tempe
The Eighth Annual Rotary River Rally features homemade cardboard boat racing April 20-21 at Tempe Beach Park.
The event kicks off Friday night with a preview of the boats and a chance for participants to vote for their favorite.
The Great Cardboard Boat Regatta takes place at Tempe Town Lake on Saturday. A full day of racing is followed by an awards ceremony.
The Advance Boat Preview runs 4-7:30 p.m. April 20; races run 9 a.m.-3 p.m. April 21. Admission is free. Proceeds support children's charities in Tempe.

The McDowell Mountain Music Festival brings some big acts to the stage of WestWorld Polo Grounds in Scottsdale April 27-28.
Headliners during the two-day event include Bob Weir and Ratdog, Los Lonely Boys and the Neville Brothers. The event is a fundraiser for Boys Hope Girls Hope of Arizona and Phoenix Day Child & Family Learning Center.

Take kids on train ride in Williams
Grand Canyon Railway in Williams hosts a railroad adventure for the whole family featuring Thomas the Tank Engine for two weekends in May.
During the Day Out With Thomas rides, participants get to ride a real train to meet favorite Thomas characters, while taking part in Thomas-and-friends-themed activities, including story time, video viewing, and arts and crafts.
Trains depart several times daily from 10:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. May 11-13 and May 18-20. Advance reservations are suggested.
