A 30-year-old man was ticketed on suspicion of unlawful discharge of a firearm after he accidentally shot himself in the leg while waiting to pick up food in the drive-thru lane of a North Omaha barbecue restaurant.
The incident occurred about 3:30 p.m. Saturday outside of Jim's Rib Haven, 3801 Ames Ave. Omaha police officers learned of the incident after being called to Immanuel Medical Center to investigate a walk-in shooting victim.
Officers reported that the man was a passenger in a 2023 Chevrolet pickup truck driven by his mother. According to the police report, the man was either attempting to load or unload a handgun when it discharged, striking him in the right leg. He was then driven to the hospital.
The firearm was booked into property at Omaha Police Central Headquarters. The man was later released from the hospital.
